Medical oncology is an independent discipline within oncology; it has become indispensable in multidisciplinary approach to cancer patient. It covers cancer diagnostics and systemic treatment, i.e. therapy with cytostatics or chemotherapy, hormonal treatment and application of biological therapeutics, including the recently introduced target drugs. The medical oncology domain is also prevention and treatment of complications occurring after systemic therapy, and treatment of disease symptoms in the initial as well as in terminal stage of the disease.

Medical oncologists are involved in multidisciplinary advisory teams and play an active part in planning the diagnostics and systemic treatment of cancer and in rehabilitation of cancer patients. They contribute significantly to the introduction of new treatment modalities into standard clinical practice through their co-operation in clinical research projects and, participating as faculty at training courses of medical doctors and health professionals of other specialties than oncology, they readily present their invaluable knowledge and skills.

Due to its specificity and comprehensive body of knowledge, covering the internal medicine and various branches of oncology mentioned above, medical oncology has been recognized as medical specialty worldwide as well as in our country.

Division of Medical Oncology has three departments:

    • Department of Systemic Treatment of Solid Tumors
    • Department of Treatment of Lymphomas
    • Unit for Intensive Medical Oncology
