Cancer registry

Division of Epidemiology and Cancer Registry

In the Epidemiology and Cancer Registry Division, our focus is on understanding and addressing cancer trends and outcomes at the population level. Cancer registries collect data on all cancer patients in Slovenia, their disease and their treatment. We process and analyse the data and interpret the results. We provide information to experts, decision-makers, patients and the general public on the burden of cancer in the country, as well as on the efficiency and effectiveness of the treatment of Slovenian oncology patients. We also frame all our findings in an international context.

The Division of Epidemiology and Cancer Registry is made up of the following units:

What We Do

In cancer registries, we collect data and produce indicators on the population burden of cancer and how cancer patients are treated nationally. Through in-depth analysis of the data collected, we monitor the effectiveness and efficiency of the Slovenian National Cancer Control Programme and conduct other epidemiological research.

The Cancer Epidemiology Unit performs detailed epidemiological studies on cancer incidence, time trends, spatial distribution, cancer survival, the effectiveness of screening programmes, etc.

The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) is a strategic programme of activities, tasks and measures necessary for efficient cancer control in the Republic of Slovenia. The programme is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Health and is managed and conducted at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana by our Division.

Research is an important part of our work – we are involved in a number of national and international research projects. We are leading the Slovenian research programme for comprehensive cancer control SloraPRO, under the mandate of the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS).

For decades, we have been a teaching base in cancer epidemiology for under- and post-graduate students of medicine and other health schools, for medical residents in public health and other specialities, and also for colleagues from abroad.
