The National Cancer Control Programme
The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) is a strategic programme of activities, tasks and measures aimed at efficient cancer control in the Republic of Slovenia. It is based on international recommendations and is tailored to the healthcare system of the Republic of Slovenia, aiming to provide all citizens with equal access to quality healthcare in the field of oncology. The NCCP consolidates the views of the health policies, the medical profession and civil society into a comprehensive cancer control strategy.
The NCCP defines detailed objectives at all levels of healthcare – primary, secondary and tertiary – for primary and secondary prevention, diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation, palliative care, research, education and monitoring the cancer burden. Actions, timelines and responsible institutions are identified to achieve each of these detailed objectives of the programme. The objectives are set for a five-year period and the current NCCP programme for 2022-2026 also defines a renewed and more operational way of managing the programme, allowing transparent, competent and professional management of one of the most complex areas of our health system.
More information on the Slovenian NCCP can be found on the dedicated programme page: www.dpor.si.
Professional Competence
The programme is under the responsibility of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia and is managed and conducted by our division at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana. The main coordinator of the NCCP 2022-2026 is Sonja Tomšič, MD, PhD, and her deputy is Prof. Janez Žgajnar, MD, PhD, both employees of the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana. The support of colleagues with expertise in communication and healthcare system organisation is crucial for the successful management and governance of the NCCP.
In our work, we collaborate with experts, institutions and organisations in the field of cancer, both within and outside the healthcare sector. We are also actively involved in international activities related to cancer.
