Slovenian Cancer Registry

The Slovenian Cancer Registry is one of the oldest population-based registries in Europe. It was established in 1950 at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana as a dedicated service for collecting and processing data on all new cancer cases (incidence) and on the survival of cancer patients. The Slovenian Cancer Registry has been a regular member of the International Association of Cancer Registries – IACR since its foundation in 1968, and of the European Network of Cancer Registries – ENCR since its establishment.

An overview of the work and important events from the establishment of the Cancer Registry in 1950 to the present day has been compiled on the occasion of the 70th anniversary and is available on our dedicated page.

Cancer reporting has been compulsory and legally required in the Republic of Slovenia (Official Gazette of the SRS, No 10/50, No 29/50, No 14/65, No 1/80, No 45/82, No 42/85; Official Gazette of the RS, No 9/92, No 65/00, No 47/15 and No 31/18) since the foundation of the Cancer Registry. All healthcare providers in Slovenia report information on cancer patients to the Registry. Traditionally, institutions have submitted data on a special form – the Cancer notification form. In 2019, we've started to introduce so-called active registration, where hospitals prepare a list of patients eligible for registration in their information systems and send it to the Cancer Registry. Passive reporting with paper notification forms is thus being phased out.

All Cancer Registry data is freely accessible to interested parties through the interactive website Slovenia and CancerSLORA. SLORA provides quick and simple access to most of the cancer data in Slovenia and contains descriptions and hyperlinks to European and global cancer databases.

Annual Reports on Cancer in Slovenia

One of the permanent ways of providing processed information is the annual printed report ‘Cancer in Slovenia’ (published as Cancer Incidence in Slovenia between 1978 and 2006), which are also available in electronic format.
