Division of Epidemiology and Cancer Registry

Cancer Registries Unit

Cancer registries are a service for the systematic collection, storage, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data on cancer patients, their disease and their treatment. The Slovenian Cancer Registry manages cancer patients nationwide, while the work of the Hospital-Based Cancer Registry of the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana focuses on the patients of the home institution. Clinical Cancer Registries for the most common cancers record an extended range of data on diagnosis and treatment and produce indicators for evaluating the quality of care provided to oncology patients.

The Cancer Registry is defined as a database in the Healthcare Database Act. In the collection and processing of data, we ensure compliance with the applicable legislation concerning the collection, protection and use of health data.

Professional Competence

Registered nurses with specialised knowledge in cancer registration are central to the collection of data on patients, their disease and their treatment. Data is obtained from all Slovenian healthcare institutions providing care for cancer patients. We continuously ensure the completeness and quality of the data, as well as compliance with international rules for the high-quality recording and coding of cancer data. Data is regularly submitted to international databases, thus enabling comparisons of Slovenian outcomes with other countries.

The work of our division is supported by a team of IT and data processors/analysts, who are also responsible for the preparation of annual reports and other data presentations. We maintain our own information system, which allows us to electronically retrieve data from hospitals, outpatient facilities and laboratories, to properly code and classify it, and to digitalise data received in paper form. We are constantly providing education for our staff, regularly collaborate with doctors with a range of clinical specialities, and are actively involved in the education of the next generation.
