Research

As the national reference institution for cancer treatment in Slovenia, the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana conducts research that is closely integrated with clinical practice and education. Its research spans the full spectrum of oncology, from cancer biology and epidemiology to early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and the monitoring of the effects of cancer and its treatment.

By integrating basic, translational, clinical, and public health research, we generate new knowledge and facilitate its effective translation into clinical practice. Our work focuses on developing innovative, evidence-based approaches to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, while improving patients’ quality of life.

The vision of the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana is to consolidate and further strengthen its position as a leading national and internationally recognised research institution in oncology. Through research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and active engagement in the international research community, the Institute aims to make a significant contribution to scientific progress and the effective control of cancer.

Research is a core driver of the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana’s development and is carried out across all its organisational units. Its close integration with clinical practice helps strengthen professional excellence across all areas of cancer care. Research findings are reflected in scientific publications, clinical guidelines, innovations, new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and improved outcomes for patients with cancer.

Our research is built on interdisciplinary collaboration among physicians, biologists, pharmacists, molecular biologists, geneticists, epidemiologists, nurses, psychologists, physicists, and many other specialists. It is supported by dedicated research infrastructure, a biobank, advanced laboratory technologies, and databases that enable high-quality research in accordance with international quality standards.

The main objective of research at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana is to advance scientific knowledge and ensure its effective translation into patient care, thereby contributing to safer, more effective, and personalised cancer care. Our work is guided by research excellence, innovation, scientific integrity, ethical conduct, accountability, openness, and a commitment to collaboration and knowledge transfer for the benefit of patients, healthcare professionals, and society.

Basic research focuses on understanding the molecular, genetic, cellular, and immunological mechanisms underlying the onset, development, and progression of cancer. Translational research bridges laboratory discoveries and clinical application. It encompasses the development and validation of biomarkers, personalised medicine, research into the tumour microenvironment, novel diagnostic methods, and innovative therapeutic approaches. Clinical research includes investigator-initiated and commercial clinical trials across all phases, research into treatment outcomes and patients’ quality of life, supportive care, and the monitoring of the long-term consequences of cancer and its treatment.

Epidemiological, preventive, and public health research also plays an important role in the Institute’s research activities, supporting the development of national cancer control strategies.
