A Randomised Controlled Trial of (Early) Prophylactic Radiotherapy to Prevent Bone Complications in Patients with Metastatic Solid Cancers (pRevenT)

 

The pRevenT study investigates whether early radiotherapy of asymptomatic bone metastases in patients with metastatic cancer can prevent serious complications, such as pain, bone fractures or spinal cord compression.

Bone metastases are a common complication of advanced cancer and can significantly worsen patients’ quality of life and require urgent medical interventions. The purpose of the study is to determine whether such complications can be prevented with early preventive radiotherapy.

Purpose of the study

To determine whether early prophylactic radiotherapy of high-risk bone metastases reduces the incidence of skeletal complications and improves the course of disease and patients’ quality of life.

Study procedure

This is an interventional, randomised phase II clinical trial.

Patients are divided into two groups:

  • one group receives standard treatment,
  • the other group receives preventive radiotherapy of asymptomatic bone metastases in addition to standard treatment.

Participating patients are regularly followed, attend follow-up visits and complete questionnaires on pain and quality of life.

Who can take part?

Adult patients with metastatic solid cancer who have bone metastases with a high risk of complications but which do not yet cause severe symptoms.

How does inclusion take place?

The patient will be informed about the study by a physician. Participation requires signing an informed consent form after appropriate information has been provided.

Participation is voluntary and may be withdrawn at any time without affecting further treatment.

Significance of the study

The results of the study will contribute to the development of new treatment approaches aimed at preventing disease-related complications and improving the quality of life of patients with advanced cancer.
