Assessment of the effect of hyperbaric oxygenation on parotid gland function after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer using magnetic resonance imaging

 

We aim to assess how hyperbaric oxygen therapy affects the function of the parotid salivary glands after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.

The main treatment methods for head and neck cancer are surgery and radiotherapy. Radiotherapy can lead to irreversible changes in the salivary glands, which may result in reduced saliva production and flow, as well as changes in saliva composition. These changes can contribute to radiation-related dental caries.

Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) may improve salivary gland function. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a non-invasive treatment method in which the patient breathes pure oxygen, more than 95%, in a special chamber under increased atmospheric pressure.

Purpose of the study

To determine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to assess the response of the parotid salivary glands to HBO therapy after radiotherapy.

Study procedure

Before undergoing surgery in the oral cavity, patients will receive HBO therapy. HBO therapy will consist of 20 sessions, each lasting 90 minutes. One session means one oxygen treatment. Before and after HBO therapy, patients will also undergo MRI imaging and clinical saliva tests.

Who can take part?

Patients who were treated with radiotherapy for head or neck cancer more than 24 months ago and who are scheduled for oral surgery to remove carious teeth or to receive dental implants.
