Efficacy of combined chemotherapy and ablative stereotactic radiotherapy (SBRT) as first-line treatment for locally advanced inoperable pancreatic cancer
Effectiveness of combining chemotherapy and precise radiotherapy in the treatment of patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer.
Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) enables highly precise irradiation with a high dose, thereby achieving excellent local disease control. The aim is to assess the effect of combined treatment with chemotherapy and SBRT on the possibility of surgical treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Purpose of the study
To assess response to combined treatment with chemotherapy and ablative radiotherapy in patients with locally advanced inoperable pancreatic cancer.
Study procedure
You will first be treated with chemotherapy, which is the recommended treatment. After three months, you will undergo CT imaging of the chest and abdomen. If there are no signs of disease progression, treatment with SBRT will continue.
Eight to twelve weeks after completion of radiotherapy, we will assess whether your disease has become operable using CT imaging of the chest and abdomen, with or without MRI. In the meantime, you will continue with the chemotherapy you were receiving before SBRT.
If imaging shows that surgery is possible, your case will be presented to surgeons for an operation at the nearest healthcare institution capable of performing this type of surgery. If surgery is not possible, you will continue with chemotherapy.
Who can take part?
Patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer after initial chemotherapy.
