Electrochemotherapy Induces Changes in Tumor Microenvironment of Cutaneous and Subcutaneous Metastases in Patients with Cutaneous Melanoma
Investigating the effect of local treatment on tumour response and the effectiveness of immunotherapy.
In patients with advanced cutaneous melanoma, cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases often occur, and their response to treatment may vary. Current research shows that the tumour microenvironment — the tissue surrounding the tumour, which can influence the activity of the immune system — plays an important role in treatment success. Electrochemotherapy is an established local treatment method which, in addition to its direct effect on the tumour, may also affect the tumour microenvironment.
Purpose of the study
The study investigates how electrochemotherapy affects the tumour microenvironment in cutaneous and subcutaneous melanoma metastases and whether this may improve the immune response and treatment effectiveness.
Study procedure
Participating patients will receive standard treatment, regardless of whether they take part in the study.
Participation includes:
- removal of selected cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases before and after treatment,
- electrochemotherapy of the remaining metastases,
- several follow-up visits (on days 3 and 10 after treatment and further follow-up),
- blood sample collection,
- completion of quality-of-life questionnaires at different time points.
The collected samples will be analysed to gain a better understanding of changes in the tumour microenvironment.
Who can take part?
Adult patients (18 years or older) with in-transit or distant cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases of cutaneous melanoma for whom treatment with electrochemotherapy is planned.
