Programme for Improvement of Malignant Spinal Cord Compression Treatment in Slovenia

Earlier recognition and more effective treatment of one of the most serious complications of cancer.

Malignant spinal cord compression is a serious complication of cancer that can significantly affect mobility, independence and quality of life. It most commonly occurs in patients with breast, prostate and lung cancer. Rapid recognition and immediate treatment are essential, as timely initiation of treatment can significantly improve patients’ mobility, independence and quality of life.

Purpose of the programme

The programme is aimed at improving the management of patients with malignant spinal cord compression in Slovenia. Its goal is to analyse the course of diagnosis and treatment, identify possible delays and develop recommendations for faster and more effective management.

Programme procedure

The programme includes:

• collection of data on the course of the disease, diagnosis and treatment,
• analysis of time delays in recognition and initiation of treatment,
• monitoring of treatment approaches and their effectiveness,
• completion of quality-of-life questionnaires at inclusion in the programme and at the follow-up visit,
• preparation of professional recommendations and educational materials for healthcare professionals and patients.

All patients are treated in accordance with established guidelines, regardless of participation in the programme.

Who can take part?

The programme may include cancer patients in whom malignant spinal cord compression is suspected, as well as patients who are already being treated for this condition.

Important information for patients

Participation is voluntary and may be withdrawn at any time without affecting treatment.

Data are collected and processed confidentially and are accessible only to the research team.

Participation does not pose an additional health risk.

Participation may not directly affect the treatment of an individual patient, but it may contribute to improving the management of future patients. The programme does not include any additional examinations or procedures outside usual care.
