Assessment of Resting Energy Expenditure Based on Intestinal Functional Status
Resting energy expenditure (REE) is a crucial indicator of an individual’s energy requirements and plays a central role in planning nutritional support, especially in patients with chronic intestinal failure (CIF). CIF occurs when the gastrointestinal tract cannot ensure adequate absorption of nutrients and fluids, often necessitating parenteral nutrition. These patients frequently exhibit altered metabolic activity due to loss of lean body mass, systemic inflammation, and adaptive physiological responses.
The aim of this dissertation is to assess differences in REE between healthy individuals and patients with various causes of CIF (e.g., short bowel syndrome and other etiologies), and to examine associations between REE, body composition (measured via DXA and BIA), and inflammatory markers (CRP, NLR, PLR, LMR). Indirect calorimetry, the gold standard for REE measurement, will be employed.
The study will follow a comparative observational design involving three groups: healthy controls, patients with short bowel syndrome, and patients with other types of intestinal failure. Statistical analysis will include descriptive, comparative, and multivariate methods. The results will enhance understanding of the energy demands in patients with CIF and support the development of personalized nutritional strategies.
